dam break analysis

I am trying to use BASEMENT to built a scenario of dam break using 2D .
then to define inundated areas downstream.
the following data are available .
1-Dem file covering downstream areas .
2-Max water level when dam breaks .
3-Reservoir surface area .
4-Reservoir water  volume .
5-Min water level after dam break .
6-Area properties down stream .

any advice where \ and how to start .

Re: dam break analysis

Dear Medoas

You need two models:breach model and flood propagation model. As far as I know Basement do not have a breach model so either use a third part breach model ( DamBreak by USGS or a statistical model that is available as basement auxiliary utilities) or make some simplifying assumption about the breach geometry and obtain outflow hydrograph yourself. Then perform normal 2d flood propagation computation in basement applying the outflow hydrograph as 'hydrograph' boundary condition. Regards

Re: dam break analysis

dear sajjad
we get results (1d )using  simplified dam break program 91 and we need to get results 2d , do you have any suggestions ?

Re: dam break analysis

You have the DEM of the area likely to be inundated by the dam break, so no need to spend lot of time in mesh building. Get the outflow hydrograph from the program 91 and apply it to Dem (after convertng it to .2dm format) and let the baseplane do the number crunching. Regards

Re: dam break analysis

Dear Sajjad,
Thank you very much for your quick response.
Since I am new in using BASEMENT, May I kindly request your advice of how to convert my hydraulic output file into .2dm format. (i.e. which procedure do i use for that purpose).
Awaiting your reply
best regards

Re: dam break analysis

in basement output you specificy 'format' as 'sms'. the output files are wriiten in the format fit for visualisation with sms. Afterwards you open those files in sms for visualising. Since I am not using sms for basement visualisation, I do not have first hand experience. Consult sms documentation for visiualising output. Regards
